The well runs dry

First, I’d like to go on the record by saying that the word “hiatus” sounds and looks stupid. It’s an affront to the English language.

Second, I’m going to take a brief hiatus from this blogging thing for a few weeks. I have some studying I need to do. It’s not school studying. It’s just general, “I want to know more about God,” studying. I have a stack of books that I haven’t touched and am now starting to feel guilty about separating them from their brethren at the book store. What kind of unloving home have I given them?

So, there you have it. That’s why I’m taking a break. You could argue that taking a break from posting once every four weeks or so won’t save me much time, but I’m prone to ignoring logical arguments like that when they don’t support my decision. That probably isn’t a good thing, but it’s mostly true nonetheless.

In the interim, please feel free to browse the site’s archives. There is probably plenty of stuff you haven’t read yet. Some of it might even be worth reading.

And while you’re reading, you should leave comments because they make me happy. Comments need not be intellectually deep or overly entertaining. They just need to exist. Some example comments are listed below if you get writer’s block:

“Nice.”
“That didn’t suck.”
“Interesting.”
“I’ve read better writing on the back of a box of cereal.”
“Sweet fancy Moses was that amazing.”
“Reading your post has lowered the quality of my life. I want my five minutes back.”

Also, random lyrics to songs may be used when in dire need of something to say. I recommend anything by STP or Sound Garden as I’m pretty sure that they picked their lyrics randomly from the dictionary.

Don't want to deter (another one of those odd words) you from your venture... but don't be away too long.

Don't fall into the black hole sun. You'll be back. Hiatuses, (hiati?) never last long and are rarely as appealing as you imagine them to be.

Was I right? I'll bet you are about done hiatusying already aren't you? Bored stiff. And all that reading you were gonna do, haven't even touched it yet have you? Might as well give it up and come on back to the blog world. You know you want to.

Hey Tom. How goes it? Read any good books lately? I have, yet I still have time to comment on your blog. Well, that may be because I've taken a hiatus from transporting aquatic invasive species to local lakes. Let the fish live, what'd they ever do to you? is what I finally concluded. Boy, the time I have on my hands now.

An update for those interested: I seem to have timed my hiatus poorly. As it turns out, girl friends take up more time than blogging does. Which means that while I haven't been posting anything, and, sadly, haven't been reading the blogs I normally read, I haven't really been reading the books I wanted to either.

This may require a return to my rapid posting pace of one to two posts a week. It seems like the only reasonable solution.

Also, Jeff, I'm glad you've decided not to overrun your local lakes with invasive foreign species. If only there were more ecologically concious people like you out there.
I can't think of a better way to waste time than with a girlfriend. How much fun! Girls are better than books.
